Carls Pops Up
Fans of Good Dog, Carl know that when Mom says, "Look after the baby, Carl. I'll be back shortly," the excitement is about to begin, and this pop-up book is no exception. As soon as she's out the door, baby and dog are off on a wild afternoon filled with adventure. The first of many interactive pull-tabs has baby climbing out of his crib and onto Carl's back, which is like the bells ringing the start of a horse race--they're out of the gate and it's full speed ahead. Down the laundry chute, into the aquarium, and off to lunch--chocolate milk (heavy on the chocolate), cookies, and a little "butter" sandwich. Kids are sure to get a kick out of the miniature cuckoo that jumps from the clock, announcing cleanup time. As usual, Carl manages to erase all evidence of mischief and has the baby back in its crib when Mom walks through the door. With pull-tabs and pop-ups on every page, this book is sure to keep young "readers" as busy as Carl and the baby. --Colleen Preston From Publishers WeeklyDay gives Carl's many fans the chance to interact with the famous canine baby-sitter in this humorously understated pop-up. The rottweiler, the baby he cares for and selected objects inventively spring from the pages and-with the help of pull-tabs-move in a variety of entertaining ways. Upon opening the cover, which features a die-cut window, the reader is welcomed by a happy baby and an attentive, eager Carl-both of whom rise up from the title page. The two bounce on a bed, dress up comically and view themselves in an acetate mirror, and make a glorious mess having a snack. Under Carl's careful watch, baby has a swim in the aquarium and-in one of the book's most engaging uses of pull-tabs-jumps down the laundry chute and lands on top of a basket of clothes in the basement. After the child has a bath and is put down for a nap, the diligent dog cleans up in time for the return of mother, who greets him with the familiar "Good Dog, Carl!" Several of the coated pages in this paper-over-board volume fold out, adding extra dimension to a winsome addition to the Carl collection. All ages. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. In excellent condition : All pages work with no tears or marks ! What a wonderful book this is ! |

The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows Written by Kenneth Grahame Published in 2005 Kenneth Grahame's exuberant yet whimsical The Wind in the Willows belongs to the golden age of children's classic novels. These charming, exciting and humorous tales of the riverbank and its life featuring the wonderfully imagined Ratty, Mole, Badger and the irrepressible but conceited Toad of Toad Hall — whose passion for motor cars ("The only way to travel! Here today — in next week tomorrow") lands him in many scrapes — still continue exert their charm over adults as well as children.
Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh in 1859. He was educated at St Edward's School, Oxford but because of family circumstances he was unable to enter Oxford University. He joined the Bank of England as a gentleman clerk in 1879, rising to become Secretary to the Bank in 1898. He wrote a series of short stories published in such collections as The Golden Age (1895) and Dream Days (1898). These featured a fictional family of five children. In 1899 he married Elspeth Thomson and their only child, Alistair, was born a year later. He left the Bank in 1908 on health grounds. The same year, The Wind in the Willows was published. The book was not an immediate success, and he never attempted to write fiction again. However, the popularity of the novel grew steadily and by the time of Grahame's death in 1932 it was recognized as a children's classic. BiographyKenneth Grahame (1859-1932) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After the death of his mother and abandonment by his father, Grahame went to live with his grandmother in Berkshire, near the River Thames. He pursued his passion for writing while maintaining a career in banking. He enjoyed great success in both endeavors. The Wind in the Willows was originally written in parts and given in letter to his son. Condition is MINT |
